The term "Sentinel" was first given to dogs that were bred and trained to use magic by the Nomads, who used them to warn against the presence of monsters during the night. When other magic-casting species were discovered, there were attempts to give them categories of their own, but Sentinels has remained the most common term in the popular consciousness.
